Getting the size right for a duvet cover
A duvet and its cover need compatible dimensions and fastening points, even when both are sold under the same size name.

Match the two rectangles
Lay the duvet flat and measure its length and width. Use those measurements alongside the manufacturer's label, especially if it has been washed or has lost some loft. A cover sold as double may not correspond to every double duvet. This becomes particularly noticeable when bedding from different brands or countries is mixed.
The cover should follow the intended fit for that filling. Too much spare cloth allows the duvet to move into a corner; a tight cover can compress it or stop the edges lying flat. Do not choose a deliberately smaller cover simply to make the duvet look fuller in a photograph. You have to sleep under the result and refit it after washing.
Check the orientation of a patterned cover. Some designs have an obvious top and bottom, while the fastening runs along a particular edge. A nearly square duvet can be put in sideways without the error being obvious until the bed is made.
Openings and ties are worth inspecting
A wide opening is easier to use with a bulky filling. Buttons should fasten without straining the cloth, and a zip should close without catching the duvet. If the cover has corner ties, check whether the duvet has suitable loops. Do not cut holes or add unsafe improvised fittings to make incompatible systems connect.
Before buying online, look for a photograph of the opening rather than only the dressed bed. Ask whether pillowcases are included and in what size. A set may appear convenient but leave you with cases that do not fit the pillows already in the room.
For a household that changes bedding frequently, the fastening method can matter more than an elaborate border. Imagine completing the task on a normal weekday, with limited floor space. A simple cover that opens far enough is easier to handle than one requiring the whole duvet to be pushed through a small gap.
Leave room for laundry
Read the care information for the cover separately from the duvet. Their washing needs may be different. Check that the wet cover can move freely in your machine according to its instructions and that your drying area can accommodate it without several dense folds.
Store the cover with its dimensions written on a small shelf label if several sizes share the same cupboard. That avoids opening three similar sets at bedtime. When the filling repeatedly shifts despite the correct size and intact fastenings, inspect how it is being fitted and whether its corners are reaching the cover corners before replacing either item.
A quick fitting check
Before closing the cover, locate all four duvet corners inside it and make sure the longer sides align. Smooth the edges without pulling the cover hard. If one edge has a large empty strip while another is crowded, check orientation before blaming the size.
After fastening, lay the covered duvet on the bed and let it settle. A filling that is evenly placed at this stage is easier to judge than one still twisted from being inserted. If a new combination repeatedly bunches in the same way, compare the measured dimensions and attachment points rather than adding makeshift clips inside the cover.
