Picking a tea strainer for the cup you use

Cup width and cleaning access are more useful buying details than a long list of tea styles.

Check the cup rim

A strainer that rests neatly over one mug may fall into a wider cup. Measure the rim and compare it with the strainer's support span. Include any small resting hook opposite the handle. A long handle alone does not guarantee a stable bridge across the opening.

Decide whether you need a strainer used while pouring or an infuser that holds leaves during brewing. The two can look similar online but work differently. An infuser needs room for its contents and a way to lift it out; a pouring strainer needs a stable position above the receiving vessel.

Choose the mesh for the leaves

Fine particles can pass through relatively open holes, while very fine mesh may take more attention to clean. Look at what you normally brew. A tool that works well for larger leaves may leave sediment when used with a finer tea. Do not assume the smallest holes always make the best purchase for every routine.

If using the strainer with milk tea, inspect the folded rim and handle joint for cleaning access. Residue can collect in places that are hard to see from above. Read the washing instructions and choose a size that you can clean without forcing a brush into delicate mesh.

Find a place for the wet tool

Once lifted from a cup, a strainer needs somewhere to drip. A small washable dish may already do that job. If a lid doubles as a rest, check how the maker intends it to be used and whether it remains stable with the wet strainer on top.

Handle carefully around hot liquid and steam. A metal handle can become hot, and a small support can shift if the cup is moved. Set up on a clear, stable surface rather than holding several components in the air while pouring.

For storage, protect the mesh from sharp utensils and heavy objects that could deform it. Inspect it if wires loosen or the rim becomes damaged. A basic strainer that fits the everyday cup and can be washed thoroughly is often more useful than a novelty shape that makes both tasks awkward.
