Separating shoes in a travel bag
A separate bag keeps soles away from clothing, but wet footwear still needs to be dried.

Match the pair, not the shoe size alone
Two pairs carrying the same shoe size can occupy quite different space. Trainers, sandals and structured formal shoes have different shapes and thicknesses. Measure the pair in the arrangement you intend to pack and compare it with the bag's usable dimensions.
Check the opening as well as the body. A narrow drawstring neck can make a large shoe awkward to insert even when the bag is long enough. A zip opening should close without pressing hard on the footwear or catching laces.
If the shoes need shape support, follow their maker's guidance. A soft shoe bag separates them from other belongings but does not prevent the suitcase contents crushing them. Place them where heavy objects will not press on delicate uppers.
Keep the dirty side contained
Remove loose dirt appropriately before packing, rather than expecting the pouch to collect everything. Cover or arrange soles so they do not rub directly against clean clothing. If using separate bags for each shoe, check that the pair remains easy to find when unpacking.
Mesh and solid pouches serve different purposes. Mesh offers visibility and airflow but does not contain fine dirt or moisture in the same way as a solid barrier. A solid pouch may keep the rest of the luggage cleaner, yet it should not be used to store damp shoes indefinitely.
After rain, dry footwear as its instructions permit before packing if time allows. If temporary separation is unavoidable, unpack promptly at the destination and let both shoes and pouch dry. Do not leave the closed bundle at the bottom of a bag for the rest of the trip.
Make cleaning straightforward
Read the pouch's own care instructions. A washable fabric bag may be convenient, but coatings, trims or structured parts can change its cleaning needs. Empty grit before washing and dry the seams fully before storage.
Keep the shoe pouch assigned to that role. If you repurpose it for clean clothing, clean it suitably first rather than relying on its appearance. For occasional travel, a simple correctly sized dedicated pouch may do everything required; several elaborate compartments are useful only if they fit the footwear you actually take.
