Sheer curtains as one layer of a window
Sheers soften daylight, but their privacy depends on the light on both sides of the window.

Look from both sides
A sheer curtain can make a room feel less exposed during the day while still admitting light. At night, with lights on indoors, the view from outside can be quite different. Do not judge privacy only by standing inside a bright room at midday.
If possible, check the window from an appropriate outside position with the room lit as it would be in the evening. Keep personal spaces unoccupied for the check. If the view is too clear, plan an opaque curtain or suitable blind as another layer. A denser-looking sheer is not a reliable substitute for checking the actual conditions.
Give each layer a job
A sheer can remain closed for softened daylight while an outer curtain is drawn only when needed. This works best when the hardware gives the layers enough room to move independently. If they rub together, opening one may drag the other across the window.
Measure the depth available near handles and the opening window. A second track takes space, and the folded fabric takes more. Check the combined weight against the support's instructions and use suitable fixings. Adding a layer should not make the original rail unstable.
Choose the amount of gathering deliberately. A fuller sheer has more folds and a different appearance from a panel stretched across the same opening. Compare the recommended coverage, not only the flat panel width. Check whether the listing includes one panel or a pair.
Live with the delicate fabric
Fine fabric can catch on rough window frames, jewellery and sharp-edged hooks. Inspect the route it moves through, particularly near a frequently used balcony door. A hem that sweeps the floor may pick up dirt from regular mopping and need more frequent attention.
Follow the care label and remove hardware where required before washing. Do not assume a gentle-looking cloth can withstand wringing or a hot iron. If it is hung to dry, use a suitable arrangement that supports it without creating stretched points.
When the sheer is mainly decorative, keep the decision simple: does it soften the light pleasantly, move easily and work with the evening privacy layer? Those observations are more useful than descriptions of airy luxury that do not tell you how the window will function.
